Thankful in Good Times and Hard Times

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18: "Always be joyful and never stop praying. Whatever happens, keep thanking God because of Jesus Christ. This is what God wants you to do.” (CEV)

It is easy to be thankful when life is good—when we have food, friends, family, or good health. Many people and cultures teach us to say “thank you” for kindness and help. In happy times, thankfulness feels natural.

But this verse tells us to give thanks “whatever happens.” This means in both good and bad times. It does not mean we must pretend our problems are small. Instead, it means thankfulness is also a choice. Even in hard times—when we are sick, lonely, or worried—we can still look for something good.

Why is this important? When we choose to be thankful, we can see small blessings: a kind word, a warm meal, or someone who cares. Thankfulness helps us stay hopeful and peaceful, even when life is difficult.

In the last part of the verse, we learn the reason for this attitude: “because of Jesus Christ.” Christians believe they can give thanks in every situation because Jesus gives hope, forgives sins, and is always with them. This is why they choose to thank God—not only when life is easy, but also when it is hard.
